Celebrities on Twitter.- For many celebrities the social networking platforms have shown to be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, through the social networking sites actors, singers and other public figures have the chance of maintaining constant contact with their followers and fans. On the other hand, public figures take the risk that their private lives become public fodder and they must take steps to protect privacy while their popularity will be exposed to public scrutiny.

In recent times, we have witnessed how the popularity of many celebrities has boosted thanks to their activities in social networking websites. However, within a few months the same celebrities have struggled to keep their private lives away from curious eyes.

This is the case of some celebrities like American actor Ashton Kutcher, Irish singer Sidney O´Connor or singer and actress Courtney Love who have decided to leave the micro-blog Twitter after some of their online comments did not obtain enough support from their followers. As a consequence, they have left the management of their accounts in the hands of professional online marketing companies while joining a group that is becoming increasingly popular, 'Twitter Quitters'.
